Our Clients Requirements
Our client had recently purchased a large tower crane hire company to compliment their concrete Slip forming service. Having purchased other facilities from Airblast previously the client asked us to design a facility for their new site in Sheffield which would allow them to blast clean and re-paint tower crane sections as efficiently as possible. These large lattice structures weighing up to 13 tonne each would prove to be a challenge.

Key Decision Making Factors
Location of Proposed unit External
Units Working Hours per Day Two shifts of 8 hours 5 days per week
Internal Dimensions 15mt long, 4mt wide & 5mt high in each side of the facility

Our Solution
It occurred to us that this facility should be made up of an in-line Blast then Paint / Bake units. Running through the facility and 15mt outside both ends would be a rail track carrying our pneumatically powered bogy. The method of operation would be; a crane section was loaded on the bogy positioned outside the blast room. This would then be driven into the blast room. This section would be equipped with a full recover floor, central pit for blasting the underside of the sections, two blast machines, reverse jet dust extraction and high level access platforms. Once blasted the sections would be driven out of the blast section and on into the spray section. Painting was to be done by means of a Graco air assisted airless system located remotely in a paint mix room. Once painting was completed the facility would be turned over to bake mode.

As well as the two main elements of this facility we were asked to include a 500cfm compressor package in its own compressor house and a plant room incorporating the blast machines, grit elevator and paint mix room.

Airblast completed the whole installation including all plant, portal framed building and civils in six weeks. From commencing design to handover took approximately ten weeks.
